Ownership of title formats by rights holders is stored at the title format level. This allows you to configure different rights holders for each title format. For instance, as well as the author rights holder, an illustrator may be an additional rights holder on the softcover title format and a narrator may be an additional rights holder on the audiobook title format.
Tiers #
Tiers are useful when you wish to vary the percentage ownership of the title format based on sales of that title format, either by units sold or net royalties earned.
By default, a title format has only one tier, though multiple tiers can be added.
Each tier must total 100% ownership (the sum of the percentage ownership for all rights holders in that tier). Royalties HQ will not allow ownership to exceed 100% in each tier.
Ownership examples #
Let’s look at some ownership examples. For a title with two formats (softcover and audiobook), you could have this arrangement:
Title A – softcover edition
The Units sold dictates the tier breakpoints (i.e., how many units must be sold before the next tier becomes active).
Tier 1 (up to 1000 units sold) | Tier 2 (up to 5000 units sold) | Tier 3 (up to unlimited units sold)
Rights holder 1 (author) | 5% | 10 % | 15 % |
Rights holder 2 (Illustrator) | 5% | 5 % | 0 % |
Rights holder 3 (publisher) | 90% | 85% | 85% |
Title A – audiobook edition
This is similar to the softcover above, however, the tier breakpoints are now dictated by the net royalties earned by this title format (the audiobook).
Tier 1 (up to $1200) | Tier 2 (up to unlimited)
Rights holder 1 (author) | 10% | 20% |
Rights holder 2 (narrator) | 20 % | 0% |
Rights holder 3 (publisher) | 70% | 80% |
